Shane was appropriately brutal and did a very good job of representing the two men's different tactics – Rick was no doubt a formidable and dangerous guy in a fight, wailing on Shane with a series of punches. Of course, it was also gratifying to finally see that conflict turn physical, with a fight we've been waiting to see for a long time. Not anymore," said Shane - has of course been the core conflict on the series for awhile now, but it was very gratifying to see it actually articulated by these two. But Mazzara did say he felt the show was moving too slowly in the first half of the season, and I think we're seeing his resolve to move things along more quickly now, in a gratifying way. That's not to say it's as easy as saying "Darabont was the problem", as we'll probably never know the full story and Darabont is obviously an extremely talented man. We're fully in the " Glen Mazzara era" of the series now – the current Walking Dead showrunner recently clarified in an interview with Vulture that Frank Darabont was involved in the series, in some capacity, up through the episode "Secrets" – basically everything until the midseason finale, "Pretty Much Dead Already." Mazzara also noted that Darabont was the one more into a slow burn style of storytelling and, for instance, did not want Lori admitting to her affair with Shane yet in "Secrets" – which I think would have been maddening to have kept unrevealed any longer. An extremely tense episode that both felt big and bold (via some great action and zombie/gore moments) and more specific and focused (thanks to a much smaller group of characters than usual), it really showed off the strengths of the series. ![]() ![]() " 18 Miles Out" was easily one of the best episodes of The Walking Dead so far.
